15. Al-Hijr سُورَةُ الحِجۡرِ
Yusuf AliL. R. These are the Ayats of Revelation,- of a Qur'an that makes things clear
Saheeh InternationalAlif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur'an
«الر» الله أعلم بمراده بذلك «تلك» هذه الآيات «آيات الكتاب» القرآن والإضافة بمعنى من «وقرآن مبين» مظهر للحق من الباطل عطف بزيادة صفة.
Yusuf AliAgain and again will those who disbelieve, wish that they had bowed (to God's will) in Islam
Saheeh InternationalPerhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims
«رُبَّمَا» بالتشديد والتخفيف «يود» يتمنى «الذين كفروا» يوم القيامة إذا عاينوا حالهم وحال المسلمين «لو كانوا مسلمين» ورب للتكثير فإنه يكثر منهم تمني ذلك وقيل للتقليل فإن الأهوال تدهشهم فلا يفيقون حتى يتمنوا ذلك إلا في أحيان قليلة.
Yusuf AliLeave them alone, to enjoy (the good things of this life) and to please themselves: let (false) hope amuse them: soon will knowledge (undeceive them)
Saheeh InternationalLet them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know
«ذرهم» اترك الكفار يا محمد «يأكلوا ويتمتعوا» بدنياهم «ويلههم» يشغلهم «الأمل» بطول العمر وغيره عن الإيمان «فسوف يعلمون» عاقبة أمرهم وهذا قبل الأمر بالقتال.
Yusuf AliNever did We destroy a population that had not a term decreed and assigned beforehand
Saheeh InternationalAnd We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree
«وما أهلكنا من» زائدة «قرية» أريد أهلها «إلا ولها كتاب» أجل «معلوم» محدود لإهلاكها.
Yusuf AliNeither can a people anticipate its term, nor delay it
Saheeh InternationalNo nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter
«ما تسبق من» زائدة «أمة أجلها وما يستأخرون» يتأخرون عنه.
Yusuf AliThey say: "O thou to whom the Message is being revealed! truly thou art mad (or possessed)
Saheeh InternationalAnd they say, "O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad
«وقالوا» أي كفار مكة للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم «يا أيها الذي نُزّل عليه الذكر» القرآن في زعمه «إنك لمجنون».
Yusuf AliWhy bringest thou not angels to us if it be that thou hast the Truth
Saheeh InternationalWhy do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful
«لو ما» هلا «تأتينا بالملائكة إن كنت من الصادقين» في قولك إنك نبي وإن هذا القرآن من عند الله.
Yusuf AliWe send not the angels down except for just cause: if they came (to the ungodly), behold! no respite would they have
Saheeh InternationalWe do not send down the angels except with truth; and the disbelievers would not then be reprieved
قال تعالى «ما تَنَزَّلُ» فيه حذف إحدى التاءين «الملائكة إلا بالحق» بالعذاب «وما كانوا إذاً» أي حين نزول الملائكة بالعذاب «منظرين» مؤخرين.
Yusuf AliWe have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it (from corruption)
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian
«إنا نحن» تأكيد لاسم إن أو فصل «نزلنا الذكر» القرآن «وإنا له لحافظون» من التبديل والتحريف والزيادة والنقص.
Yusuf AliWe did send apostles before thee amongst the religious sects of old
Saheeh InternationalAnd We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muhammad], among the sects of the former peoples
«ولقد أرسلنا من قبلك» رسلا «في شيع» فرق «الأولين».
Yusuf AliBut never came an apostle to them but they mocked him
Saheeh InternationalAnd no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him
«وما» كان «يأتيهم من رسول إلا كانوا به يستهزئون» كاستهزاء قومك بك وهذا تسلية له صلى الله عليه وسلم.
Yusuf AliEven so do we let it creep into the hearts of the sinners
Saheeh InternationalThus do We insert denial into the hearts of the criminals
«كذلك نسلكه» أي مثل إدخالنا التكذيب في قلوب أولئك ندخله «في قلوب المجرمين» أي كفار مكة.
Yusuf AliThat they should not believe in the (Message); but the ways of the ancients have passed away
Saheeh InternationalThey will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples
«لا يؤمنون به» بالنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم «وقد خلت سنة الأولين» أي سنة الله فيهم من تعذيبهم بتكذيبهم أنبياءهم وهؤلاء مثلهم.
Yusuf AliEven if We opened out to them a gate from heaven, and they were to continue (all day) ascending therein
Saheeh InternationalAnd [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend
«ولو فتحنا عليهم بابا من السماء فظلوا فيه» في الباب «يعرجون» يصعدون.
Yusuf AliThey would only say: "Our eyes have been intoxicated: Nay, we have been bewitched by sorcery
Saheeh InternationalThey would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic
«لقالوا إنما سُكِّرت» سدت «أبصارنا بل نحن قوم مسحورون» يخيل إلينا ذلك.
Yusuf AliIt is We Who have set out the zodiacal signs in the heavens, and made them fair-seeming to (all) beholders
Saheeh InternationalAnd We have placed within the heaven great stars and have beautified it for the observers
«ولقد جعلنا في السماء بروجا» اثني عشر: الحمل والثور والجوزاء والسرطان والأسد والسنبلة والميزان والعقرب والقوس والجدي والدلو والحوت، وهي منازل الكواكب السبعة السيارة: المريخ وله الحمل والعقرب، والزهرة ولها الثور والميزان، وعطارد وله الجوزاء والسنبلة، والقمر وله السرطان، والشمس ولها الأسد، والمشتري وله القوس والحوت، وزحل له الجدي والدلو «وزيناها» بالكواكب «للناظرين».
Yusuf AliAnd (moreover) We have guarded them from every evil spirit accursed
Saheeh InternationalAnd We have protected it from every devil expelled [from the mercy of Allah]
«وحفظناها» بالشهب «من كل شيطان رجيم» مرجوم.
Yusuf AliBut any that gains a hearing by stealth, is pursued by a flaming fire, bright (to see)
Saheeh InternationalExcept one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear burning flame
«إلا» لكن «من استرق السمع» خطفه «فأتبعه شهاب مبين» كوكب يضيء ويحرقه أو يثقبه أو يخبله.
Yusuf AliAnd the earth We have spread out (like a carpet); set thereon mountains firm and immovable; and produced therein all kinds of things in due balance
Saheeh InternationalAnd the earth - We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing
«والأرض مددناها» بسطناها «وألقينا فيها رواسي» جبالا ثوابت لئلا تتحرك بأهلها «وأنبتنا فيها من كل شيء موزون» معلوم مقدر.
Yusuf AliAnd We have provided therein means of subsistence,- for you and for those for whose sustenance ye are not responsible
Saheeh InternationalAnd We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you are not providers
«وجعلنا لكم فيها معايش» بالياء من الثمار والحبوب «و» جعلنا لكم «من لستم له برازقين» من العبيد والدواب والأنعام فإنما يرزقهم الله.
Yusuf AliAnd there is not a thing but its (sources and) treasures (inexhaustible) are with Us; but We only send down thereof in due and ascertainable measures
Saheeh InternationalAnd there is not a thing but that with Us are its depositories, and We do not send it down except according to a known measure
«وإن» ما «من» زائدة «شيء إلا عندنا خزائنه» مفاتيح خزائنه «وما ننزله إلا بقدر معلوم» على حسب المصالح.
Yusuf AliAnd We send the fecundating winds, then cause the rain to descend from the sky, therewith providing you with water (in abundance), though ye are not the guardians of its stores
Saheeh InternationalAnd We have sent the fertilizing winds and sent down water from the sky and given you drink from it. And you are not its retainers
«وأرسلنا الرياح لواقح» تلقح السحاب فيمتلئ ماء «فأنزلنا من السماء» السحاب «ماء» مطرا «فأسقيناكموه وما أنتم له بخازنين» أي ليست خزائنه بأيديكم.
Yusuf AliAnd verily, it is We Who give life, and Who give death: it is We Who remain inheritors (after all else passes away)
Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritor
«وإنا لنحن نحي ونميت ونحن الوارثون» الباقون نرث جميع الخلق.
Yusuf AliTo Us are known those of you who hasten forward, and those who lag behind
Saheeh InternationalAnd We have already known the preceding [generations] among you, and We have already known the later [ones to come]
«ولقد علمنا المستقدمين منكم» أي من تقدم من الخلق من لدن آدم «ولقد علمنا المستأخرين» المتأخرين إلى يوم القيامة.
Yusuf AliAssuredly it is thy Lord Who will gather them together: for He is perfect in Wisdom and Knowledge
Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, your Lord will gather them; indeed, He is Wise and Knowing
«وإن ربك هو يحشرهم إنه حكيم» في صنعه «عليم» بخلقه.
Yusuf AliWe created man from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape
Saheeh InternationalAnd We did certainly create man out of clay from an altered black mud
«ولقد خلقنا الإنسان» آدم «من صلصال» طين يابس يسمع له صلصلة إذا نقر «من حمأ» طين أسود «مسنون» متغير.
Yusuf AliAnd the Jinn race, We had created before, from the fire of a scorching wind
Saheeh InternationalAnd the jinn We created before from scorching fire
«والجان» أبا الجان وهو إبليس «خلقناه من قبل» أي قبل خلق آدم «من نار السموم» هي نار لا دخان لها تنفذ من المسام.
Yusuf AliBehold! thy Lord said to the angels: "I am about to create man, from sounding clay from mud moulded into shape
Saheeh InternationalAnd [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "I will create a human being out of clay from an altered black mud
«و» اذكر «إذ قال ربك للملائكة إني خالق بشرا من صلصال من حمأ مسنون».
Yusuf AliWhen I have fashioned him (in due proportion) and breathed into him of My spirit, fall ye down in obeisance unto him
Saheeh InternationalAnd when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration
«فإذا سويته» أتممته «ونفخت» أجريت «فيه من روحي» فصار حيا وإضافة الروح إليه تشريف لآدم «فقعوا له ساجدين» سجود تحية بالانحناء.
Yusuf AliSo the angels prostrated themselves, all of them together
Saheeh InternationalSo the angels prostrated - all of them entirely
«فسجد الملائكة كلهم أجمعون» فيه تأكيدان.
Yusuf AliNot so Iblis: he refused to be among those who prostrated themselves
Saheeh InternationalExcept Iblees, he refused to be with those who prostrated
«إلا إبليس» هو أبو الجن كان بين الملائكة «أبى» امتنع من «أن يكون مع الساجدين».
Yusuf Ali(God) said: "O Iblis! what is your reason for not being among those who prostrated themselves
Saheeh International[Allah] said, O Iblees, what is [the matter] with you that you are not with those who prostrate
«قال» تعالى «يا إبليس مالك» ما منعك «أ» ن «لا» زائدة «تكون مع الساجدين».
Yusuf Ali(Iblis) said: "I am not one to prostrate myself to man, whom Thou didst create from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "Never would I prostrate to a human whom You created out of clay from an altered black mud
«قال لم أكن لأسجد» لا ينبغي لي أن أسجد «لبشر خلقته من صلصال من حمأ مسنون».
Yusuf Ali(God) said: "Then get thee out from here; for thou art rejected, accursed
Saheeh International[Allah] said, "Then get out of it, for indeed, you are expelled
«قال فاخرج منها» أي الجنة وقيل من السماوات «فإنك رجيم» مطرود.
Yusuf AliAnd the curse shall be on thee till the day of Judgment
Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, upon you is the curse until the Day of Recompense
«وإن عليك اللعنة إلى يوم الدين» الجزاء.
Yusuf Ali(Iblis) said: "O my Lord! give me then respite till the Day the (dead) are raised
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected
«قال رب فأنظرني إلى يوم يبعثون» أي الناس.
Yusuf Ali(God) said: "Respite is granted thee
Saheeh International[Allah] said, "So indeed, you are of those reprieved
«قال فإنك من المنظرين».
Yusuf AliTill the Day of the Time appointed
Saheeh InternationalUntil the Day of the time well-known
«إلى يوم الوقت المعلوم» وقت النفخة الأولى.
Yusuf Ali(Iblis) said: "O my Lord! because Thou hast put me in the wrong, I will make (wrong) fair-seeming to them on the earth, and I will put them all in the wrong
Saheeh International[Iblees] said, "My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make [disobedience] attractive to them on earth, and I will mislead them all
«قال ربّ بما أغويتني» أي بإغوائك لي والباء للقسم وجوابه «لأزيِّنَنَّ لهم في الأرض» المعاصي «ولأغوينهم أجمعين»,
Yusuf AliExcept Thy servants among them, sincere and purified (by Thy Grace)
Saheeh InternationalExcept, among them, Your chosen servants
«إلا عبادك منهم المخلصين» أي المؤمنين.
Yusuf Ali(God) said: "This (way of My sincere servants) is indeed a way that leads straight to Me
Saheeh International[Allah] said, "This is a path [of return] to Me [that is] straight
«قال» تعالى «هذا صراط عليَّ مستقيم».
Yusuf AliFor over My servants no authority shalt thou have, except such as put themselves in the wrong and follow thee
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, My servants - no authority will you have over them, except those who follow you of the deviators
وهو «إن عبادي» أي المؤمنين «ليس لك عليهم سلطان» قوة «إلا» لكن «من اتبعك من الغاوين» الكافرين.
Yusuf AliAnd verily, Hell is the promised abode for them all
Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, Hell is the promised place for them all
«وإن جهنم لموعدهم أجمعين» أي من اتبعك معك.
Yusuf AliTo it are seven gates: for each of those gates is a (special) class (of sinners) assigned
Saheeh InternationalIt has seven gates; for every gate is of them a portion designated
«لها سبعة أبواب» أطباق «لكل باب» منها «منهم جزء» نصيب «مقسوم».
Yusuf AliThe righteous (will be) amid gardens and fountains (of clear-flowing water)
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, the righteous will be within gardens and springs
«إن المتقين في جنات» بساتين «وعيون» تجري فيها.
Yusuf Ali(Their greeting will be): "Enter ye here in peace and security
Saheeh International[Having been told], "Enter it in peace, safe [and secure]
ويقال لهم «ادخلوها بسلام» أي سالمين من كل مخوّف أو مع سلام أي سلموا وادخلوا «آمنين» من كل فزع.
Yusuf AliAnd We shall remove from their hearts any lurking sense of injury: (they will be) brothers (joyfully) facing each other on thrones (of dignity)
Saheeh InternationalAnd We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment, [so they will be] brothers, on thrones facing each other
«ونزعنا ما في صدورهم من غِلِّ» حقد «إخوانا» حال منهم «على سُرر متقابلين» حال أيضا أي لا ينظر بعضهم إلى قفا بعض لدورات الأسرَّة بهم.
Yusuf AliThere no sense of fatigue shall touch them, nor shall they (ever) be asked to leave
Saheeh InternationalNo fatigue will touch them therein, nor from it will they [ever] be removed
«لا يمسهم فيها نَصَبٌ» تعب «وما هم منها بمخرجين» أبدا.
Yusuf AliTell My servants that I am indeed the Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful
Saheeh International[O Muhammad], inform My servants that it is I who am the Forgiving, the Merciful
«نبئ» خبر يا محمد «عبادي أني أنا الغفور» للمؤمنين «الرحيم» بهم.
Yusuf AliAnd that My Penalty will be indeed the most grievous Penalty
Saheeh InternationalAnd that it is My punishment which is the painful punishment
«وأن عذابي» للعصاة «هو العذاب الأليم» المؤلم.
Yusuf AliTell them about the guests of Abraham
Saheeh InternationalAnd inform them about the guests of Abraham
«ونبئهم عن ضيف إبراهيم» وهم الملائكة اثنا عشر أو عشرة أو ثلاثة منهم جبريل.
Yusuf AliWhen they entered his presence and said, "Peace!" He said, "We feel afraid of you
Saheeh InternationalWhen they entered upon him and said, "Peace." [Abraham] said, "Indeed, we are fearful of you
«إذ دخلوا عليه فقالوا سلاما» أي هذا اللفظ «قال» إبراهيم لما عرض عليم الأكل فلم يأكلوا «إنا منكم وجلون» خائفون.
Yusuf AliThey said: "Fear not! We give thee glad tidings of a son endowed with wisdom
Saheeh International[The angels] said, "Fear not. Indeed, we give you good tidings of a learned boy
«قالوا لا توجل» لا تخف «إنا» رسل ربك «نبشرك بغلام عليم» ذي علم كثير هو إسحاق كما ذكرنا في سورة هود.
Yusuf AliHe said: "Do ye give me glad tidings that old age has seized me? Of what, then, is your good news
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "Have you given me good tidings although old age has come upon me? Then of what [wonder] do you inform
«قال أبشرتموني» بالولد «على أن مسني الكبر» حال أي مع مسه إياي «فبم» فبأي شيء «تبشرون» استفهام تعجب.
Yusuf AliThey said: "We give thee glad tidings in truth: be not then in despair
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "We have given you good tidings in truth, so do not be of the despairing
«قالوا بشرناك بالحق» بالصدق «فلا تكن من القانطين» الآيسين.
Yusuf AliHe said: "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord, but such as go astray
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except for those astray
«قال ومن» أي لا «يقنَِط» بكسر النون وفتحها «من رحمة ربه إلا الضالون» الكافرون.
Yusuf AliAbraham said: "What then is the business on which ye (have come), O ye messengers (of God)
Saheeh International[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers
«قال فما خطبكم» شأنكم «أيها المرسلون».
Yusuf AliThey said: "We have been sent to a people (deep) in sin
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals
«قالوا إنا أرسلنا إلى قوم مجرمين» كافرين أي لوط لإهلاكهم.
Yusuf AliExcepting the adherents of Lut: them we are certainly (charged) to save (from harm),- All
Saheeh InternationalExcept the family of Lot; indeed, we will save them all
«إلا آل لوط إنا لمنجوهم أجمعين» لإيمانهم.
Yusuf AliExcept his wife, who, We have ascertained, will be among those who will lag behind
Saheeh InternationalExcept his wife." Allah decreed that she is of those who remain behind
«إلا امرأته قدرنا إنها لمن الغابرين» الباقين في العذاب لكفرها.
Yusuf AliAt length when the messengers arrived among the adherents of Lut
Saheeh InternationalAnd when the messengers came to the family of Lot
«فلما جاء آل لوط» أي لوطا «المرسلون».
Yusuf AliHe said: "Ye appear to be uncommon folk
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "Indeed, you are people unknown
«قال» لهم «إنكم قوم منكرون» لا أعرفكم.
Yusuf AliThey said: "Yea, we have come to thee to accomplish that of which they doubt
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "But we have come to you with that about which they were disputing
«قالوا بل جئناك بما كانوا» أي قومك «فيه يمترون» يشكون وهو العذاب.
Yusuf AliWe have brought to thee that which is inevitably due, and assuredly we tell the truth
Saheeh InternationalAnd we have come to you with truth, and indeed, we are truthful
«وأتيناك بالحق وإنا لصادقون» في قولنا.
Yusuf AliThen travel by night with thy household, when a portion of the night (yet remains), and do thou bring up the rear: let no one amongst you look back, but pass on whither ye are ordered
Saheeh InternationalSo set out with your family during a portion of the night and follow behind them and let not anyone among you look back and continue on to where you are commanded
«فأَسْرِ بأهلك بقطع من الليل واتبع أدبارهم» امش خلفهم «ولا يلتفت منكم أحد» لئلا يرى عظيم ما ينزل بهم «وامضوا حيث تؤمرون» وهو الشام.
Yusuf AliAnd We made known this decree to him, that the last remnants of those (sinners) should be cut off by the morning
Saheeh InternationalAnd We conveyed to him [the decree] of that matter: that those [sinners] would be eliminated by early morning
«وقضينا» أوحينا «إليه ذلك الأمر» وهو «أن دابر هؤلاء مقطوع مصبحين» حال أي يتم استئصالهم في الصباح.
Yusuf AliThe inhabitants of the city came in (mad) joy (at news of the young men)
Saheeh InternationalAnd the people of the city came rejoicing
«وجاء أهل المدينة» مدينة سدوم وهم قوم لوط لما أخبروا أن في بيت لوط مردا حسانا وهم الملائكة «يستبشرون» حال طمعا في فعل الفاحشة بهم.
Yusuf AliLut said: "These are my guests: disgrace me not
Saheeh International[Lot] said, "Indeed, these are my guests, so do not shame me
«قال» لوط «إن هؤلاء ضيفي فلا تفضحون».
Yusuf AliBut fear God, and shame me not
Saheeh InternationalAnd fear Allah and do not disgrace me
«واتقوا الله ولا تخزون» بقصدكم إياهم بفعل الفاحشة بهم.
Yusuf AliThey said: "Did we not forbid thee (to speak) for all and sundry
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] people
«قالوا أو لم ننهك عن العالمين» عن إضافتهم.
Yusuf AliHe said: "There are my daughters (to marry), if ye must act (so)
Saheeh International[Lot] said, "These are my daughters - if you would be doers [of lawful marriage]
«قال هؤلاء بناتي إن كنتم فاعلين» ما تريدون من قضاء الشهوة فتزوجوهن. قال تعالى:
Yusuf AliVerily, by thy life (O Prophet), in their wild intoxication, they wander in distraction, to and fro
Saheeh InternationalBy your life, [O Muhammad], indeed they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly
«لعمرك» خطاب للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أي وحياتك «إنهم لفي سكرتهم يعمهون» يترددون.
Yusuf AliBut the (mighty) Blast overtook them before morning
Saheeh InternationalSo the shriek seized them at sunrise
«فأخذتهم الصيحة» صيحة جبريل «مشرقين» وقت شروق الشمس.
Yusuf AliAnd We turned (the cities) upside down, and rained down on them brimstones hard as baked clay
Saheeh InternationalAnd We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay
«فجعلنا عاليها» أي قراهم «سافلها» بأن رفعها جبريل إلى السماء وأسقطها مقلوبة إلى الأرض «وأمطرنا عليهم حجارة من سجيل» طين طبخ بالنار.
Yusuf AliBehold! in this are Signs for those who by tokens do understand
Saheeh InternationalIndeed in that are signs for those who discern
«إن في ذلك» المذكور «لآيات» دلالات على وحدانية الله «للمتوسمين» للناظرين المعتبرين.
Yusuf AliAnd the (cities were) right on the high-road
Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, those cities are [situated] on an established road
«وإنها» أي قرى قوم لوط «لبسبيل مقيم» طريق قريش إلى الشام لم تندرس أفلا يعتبرون بهم؟.
Yusuf AliBehold! in this is a sign for those who believed
Saheeh InternationalIndeed in that is a sign for the believers
«إن في ذلك لآية» لعبرة «للمؤمنين».
Yusuf AliAnd the Companions of the Wood were also wrong-doers
Saheeh InternationalAnd the companions of the thicket were [also] wrongdoers
«وإن» مخففة أي إنه «كان أصحاب الأيكة» هي غيضة شجر بقرب مدين وهم قوم شعيب «لظالمين» بتكذيبهم شعيبا.
Yusuf AliSo We exacted retribution from them. They were both on an open highway, plain to see
Saheeh InternationalSo We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway
«فانتقمنا منهم» بأن أهلكناهم بشدة الحر «وإنهما» أي قرى قوم لوط والأيكة «لبإمام» طريق «مبين» واضح أفلا تعتبرون بهم يا أهل مكة.
Yusuf AliThe Companions of the Rocky Tract also rejected the apostles
Saheeh InternationalAnd certainly did the companions of Thamud deny the messengers
«ولقد كذب أصحاب الحجر» واد بين المدينة والشام وهم ثمود «المرسلين» بتكذيبهم صالحا تكذيب لباقي الرسل لاشتراكهم في المجيء بالتوحيد.
Yusuf AliWe sent them Our Sings, but they persisted in turning away from them
Saheeh InternationalAnd We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away
«وآتيناهم آياتنا» في الناقة «فكانوا عنها معرضين» لا يتفكرون فيها.
Yusuf AliOut of the mountains did they hew (their) edifices, (feeling themselves) secure
Saheeh InternationalAnd they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure
«وكانوا ينحتون من الجبال بيوتا آمنين».
Yusuf AliBut the (mighty) Blast seized them of a morning
Saheeh InternationalBut the shriek seized them at early morning
«فأخذتهم الصيحة مصبحين» وقت الصباح.
Yusuf AliAnd of no avail to them was all that they did (with such art and care)
Saheeh InternationalSo nothing availed them [from] what they used to earn
«فما أغنى» دفع «عنهم» العذاب «ما كانوا يكسبون» من بناء الحصون وجمع الأموال.
Yusuf AliWe created not the heavens, the earth, and all between them, but for just ends. And the Hour is surely coming (when this will be manifest). So overlook (any human faults) with gracious forgiveness
Saheeh InternationalAnd We have not created the heavens and earth and that between them except in truth. And indeed, the Hour is coming; so forgive with gracious forgiveness
«وما خلقنا السماوات والأرض وما بينهما إلا بالحق وإن الساعة لآتية» لا محالة فيجازى كل أحد بعمله «فاصفح» يا محمد عن قومك «الصفح الجميل» أعرض عنهم إعراضا لا جزع فيه وهذا منسوخ بآية السيف.
Yusuf AliFor verily it is thy Lord who is the Master-Creator, knowing all things
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, your Lord - He is the Knowing Creator
«إن ربك هو الخلاق» لكل شيء «العليم» بكل شيء.
Yusuf AliAnd We have bestowed upon thee the Seven Oft-repeated (verses) and the Grand Qur'an
Saheeh InternationalAnd We have certainly given you, [O Muhammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qur'an
«ولقد آتيناك سبعا من المثاني» قال صلى الله عليه وسلم هي الفاتحة رواه الشيخان لأنها تثنى في كل ركعة «والقرآن العظيم».
Yusuf AliStrain not thine eyes. (Wistfully) at what We have bestowed on certain classes of them, nor grieve over them: but lower thy wing (in gentleness) to the believers
Saheeh InternationalDo not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [certain] categories of the disbelievers, and do not grieve over them. And lower your wing to the believers
«لا تمدّن عينيك إلى ما متعنا به أزواجا» أصنافا «منهم ولا تحزن عليهم» إن لم يؤمنوا «واخفض جناحك» ألن جانبك «للمؤمنين».
Yusuf AliAnd say: "I am indeed he that warneth openly and without ambiguity
Saheeh InternationalAnd say, "Indeed, I am the clear warner
«وقل إني أنا النذير» من عذاب الله أن ينزل عليكم «المبين» البين الإنذار.
Yusuf Ali(Of just such wrath) as We sent down on those who divided (Scripture into arbitrary parts)
Saheeh InternationalJust as We had revealed [scriptures] to the separators
«كما أنزلنا» العذاب «على المقتسمين» اليهود والنصارى.
Yusuf Ali(So also on such) as have made Qur'an into shreds (as they please)
Saheeh InternationalWho have made the Qur'an into portions
«الذين جعلوا القرآن» أي كتبهم المنزلة عليهم «عضين» أجزاء، حيث آمنوا ببعض وكفروا ببعض، وقيل المراد بهم الذين اقتسموا طرق مكة يصدون الناس عن الإسلام، وقال بعضهم في القرآن سحر وبعضهم كهانة وبعضهم شعر.
Yusuf AliTherefore, by the Lord, We will, of a surety, call them to account
Saheeh InternationalSo by your Lord, We will surely question them all
«فوربك لنسألنهم أجمعين» سؤال توبيخ.
Yusuf AliFor all their deeds
Saheeh InternationalAbout what they used to do
«عما كانوا يعملون».
Yusuf AliTherefore expound openly what thou art commanded, and turn away from those who join false gods with God
Saheeh InternationalThen declare what you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists
«فاصدع» يا محمد «بما تؤمر» به أي اجهر به وأمضه «وأعرض عن المشركين» هذا قبل الأمر بالجهاد.
Yusuf AliFor sufficient are We unto thee against those who scoff
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers
«إنا كفيناك المستهزئين» بك بإهلاكنا كلا بآفة وهم الوليد بن المغيرة والعاص بن وائل وعدي بن قيس والأسود بن المطلب والأسود بن عبد يغوث.
Yusuf AliThose who adopt, with God, another god: but soon will they come to know
Saheeh InternationalWho make [equal] with Allah another deity. But they are going to know
«الذين يجعلون مع الله إلها آخر» صفة وقيل مبتدأ ولتضمنه معنى الشرط دخلت الفاء في خبره وهو «فسوف يعلمون» عاقبة أمرهم.
Yusuf AliWe do indeed know how thy heart is distressed at what they say
Saheeh InternationalAnd We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say
«ولقد» للتحقيق «نعلم أنك يضيق صدرك بما يقولون» من الاستهزاء والتكذيب.
Yusuf AliBut celebrate the praises of thy Lord, and be of those who prostrate themselves in adoration
Saheeh InternationalSo exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord and be of those who prostrate [to Him]
«فسبح» ملتبسا «بحمد ربك» أي قل سبحان الله وبحمده «وكن من الساجدين» المصلين.
Yusuf AliAnd serve thy Lord until there come unto thee the Hour that is Certain
Saheeh InternationalAnd worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty (death)
«واعبد ربك حتى يأتيك اليقين» الموت.
